THE LIFE OF A BEAUTIFUL SOUL, Mrs. Mattie Vera Powe, was introduced on April 18, 1946, in Waynesboro, MS to the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert and Mildred Louise (Sumlin) McLaughlin. Her life transitioned on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at her home encircled by her beloved family.
Preceding her in death were both of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert (Mildred) McLaughlin, and her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, Mr. Shelton Ray Powe, Sr.
The foundation of her education included graduating from Waynesboro Riverview and continuing to Coahoma Community College, where she completed two years of studies. She worked for several years at Wells-Lamont Corporation. After sustaining injuries from an accident, she devoted her time to nurturing her children and home.
Mrs. Mattie was a faithful member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Waynesboro, MS for many decades until her health was compromised and attending was not in her best interest. However, she never stopped contributing. Outside of time spent with her family, she dedicated many years to her mission of the church’s “Circle #3,” the Usher board, Sunday school, and Bible Study. Alongside church, she was a faithful member of The Ebonette Club.
Known to most, she was the life of any gathering. There was no “good” time without her presence. She enjoyed being amongst her children and grandchildren and spending time with all her family every chance there was. Mattie was the root of her family. She was unmatchable at what she did. Not only for her family, but everyone who encountered her. Every mouth would be fed, her home was open to all, and she wanted everyone to be comfortable and enjoy themselves. She was just an impeccable and selfless person, overall.
To cherish many memories and her legacy are her two daughters, Lisa Darlene Powe-Wright and Cynthia (Richard) Benson; two sons, Tyrone Kinard Powe and Shelton Ray (Roxie) Powe, Jr.; her only sister, Woundlin (the late James) Louise Colbert; a niece, Alexis Colbert; nephew, Preston (Ramonda) McLaighlin; her sister in law, Shirley Powe-Hogan; two brothers in law, George Ralph (Alma) Powe and Kenneth (Sendra) Powe; seven grandchildren, DeAngelo, Jasmine, Tyler, A’Brasha, Rhylee, Tu, and Shelton Powe, III; and two great grandchildren, DeAngela and Jase. She also leaves to remember a never ending relationship and faithful help to her and her family, a daughter in love, Annie Jean Frost. Nonetheless, a host of well loved great nieces, great nephews, and all extended family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Luke MB Church, with Rev. Donald E. Miller as the officiant. Interment will follow at Serenity Gardens, also in Waynesboro.
There will be a viewing period for Mrs. Powe Monday, January 30, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Turner Funeral Home, and Tuesday, January 31, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Luke MB Church.
