Gladys Gates Obituary

MRS. GLADYS JORDAN GATES was born on December 3, 1927 to the union of the late Mr. Mack and Mrs. Lottie (Tremble) Jordan.  She was one of four children. She completed her high school education at Smith-Hughes High School in Waynesboro and later earned her associate’s degree in Computer Science. 
 

In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and sewing. She was a member of the Quilting Club, MS Homemakers’ Club (Wayne County Extension Office), AARP Chapter, The Widow’s Club, and the Eastern Star.  She was also a member of Holly Bush Missionary Baptist Church and a former treasurer for the Second Enterprise Baptist Convention.

Mrs. Gates transitioned December 31, 2023 at Wayne General Hospital.

She is survived by her son and daughter:  James Cooley and Cassandra (Rev. James) Payton; two grandchildren:  Kederick Cooley and Meagan Slack, and three great grandchildren:  Essence Gray, Elijah Chapman, and Eryss Slack. 
 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her husband, one brother, and two sisters. 
 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Holly Bush Missionary Baptist Church in Waynesboro, MS, with Rev. James Ayers as the officiant. Interment will follow at New West Cemetery. 
 

There will be a viewing period for Mrs. Gates Friday, January 5, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Turner Funeral Home.
