Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Cleveland (Baba) Wesley Peebles was born on December 25, 1953, in Shubuta, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Peebles, Jr., Carrie Ruth Heard Peebles Staten, and R.B. Staten, and his sister, Betty Jean Staten. He departed from this life on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.

Cleveland (Baba) grew up in and was a member of New Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Shubuta, Mississippi where he was active during his youth. He received his education at Shirley Owens School and Quitman High School, in Quitman, Mississippi. He was united in holy matrimony to Gloria Pou on December 26, 1987.

His entrepreneurial spirit manifested early as he started doing odd jobs and helping others find employment at a young age. Later, he helped operate his family's full-service gas station and eventually opened his own convenience store/gas station. Cleveland (Baba) loved Shubuta and served his community for most of his adult life. He was elected as the first black Alderman in Shubuta, Mississippi and held that position from July 1, 1981, through June 30, 1989. He was then elected to be the first black member of the Clarke County Board of Supervisors where he served 6 terms from January 6, 1991, until December 31, 2015. Finally, Cleveland (Baba) was voted in as mayor of Shubuta and proudly served from July 6, 2017, until he departed this life on February 3, 2024.
